A Beacon in Jersey City

The Foundation Years

The esteemed Cotton Temple Church, which initially held the name Gospel Tabernacle Church of God in Christ (COGIC), took root many years ago. Birthed in the modest confines of an edifice on Harrison Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey, the church’s journey mirrors the vibrant history of Black America. This sanctuary of faith, after its birth, made two significant relocations: first to Seidler Street and later to Union Street. Throughout these foundational years, the church witnessed the leadership of divine men, such as the late Bishop Reid, the late Elder Johnson, and the late Bishop F.D. Washington.

The Era of Bishop Charles H. Cotton

In the year 1941, a pivotal transition took place. The late Bishop Charles H. Cotton, a dedicated servant of God, took the helm as pastor of the Union Street Church. It was under his spiritually charged leadership that the congregation experienced growth and increased vitality. In time, it became evident that the Union Street location could no longer contain this burgeoning flock. With a prayerful heart, Bishop Cotton sought God’s guidance in relocating. The Lord did indeed answer, and by September 1970, the congregation found their new home, which would later be christened “Cotton Temple COGIC.”

Modern Enhancements and The Leadership of Pastor Embria Sconiers

In June 1992, the church witnessed the appointment of another divine leader, Pastor Embria Sconiers. His humble yet transformative leadership brought forth numerous improvements. The Parish House and Church Sanctuary underwent significant renovations. These two projects modernized these sacred spaces and preserved their historic essence. From constructing a new baptism pool system to acquiring state-of-the-art facilities, Pastor Sconiers left an indelible mark on Cotton Temple. In tribute to Bishop C.H. Cotton’s unwavering service, Pastor Sconiers, with the collaboration of Eld. Mario Moody, the late evangelist Juanita Pough, and Jersey City Officials achieved the renaming of Boyd Avenue to “Bishop Charles H. Cotton Plaza.”
