The esteemed Cotton Temple Church, which initially held the name Gospel Tabernacle Church of God in Christ (COGIC), took root many years ago. Birthed in the modest confines of an edifice on Harrison Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey, the church’s journey mirrors the vibrant history of Black America. This sanctuary of faith, after its birth, made two significant relocations: first to Seidler Street and later to Union Street. Throughout these foundational years, the church witnessed the leadership of divine men, such as the late Bishop Reid, the late Elder Johnson, and the late Bishop F.D. Washington.
In the year 1941, a pivotal transition took place. The late Bishop Charles H. Cotton, a dedicated servant of God, took the helm as pastor of the Union Street Church. It was under his spiritually charged leadership that the congregation experienced growth and increased vitality. In time, it became evident that the Union Street location could no longer contain this burgeoning flock. With a prayerful heart, Bishop Cotton sought God’s guidance in relocating. The Lord did indeed answer, and by September 1970, the congregation found their new home, which would later be christened “Cotton Temple COGIC.”

The year 2020 ushered in unforeseen challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about an unprecedented shift in how religious services were conducted.
